Know the
slang.
Get the meme.

Not a cringe parent guide. The full dictionary — every era, every community — with origin, tone, a picture of the template, and whether it's still cool to say it sincerely.

Built from deep research triangulated across Know Your Meme, Dictionary.com, Merriam-Webster, Oxford, Cambridge, Mental Floss, Polygon and classroom/search data. Where sources disagree, this site says Disputed instead of picking a side. Urban Dictionary is treated as evidence of use, not proof of meaning. Meme cards show the real canonical template image wherever one could be sourced and verified; where no usable real image exists (video formats, dead links, thin sources), the card carries an original illustration or the report's exact template description instead — each card's template box says which.

Illustrated collage of classic meme characters: a Shiba Inu dog, a green frog, a grumpy cat, a pixel cat trailing a rainbow, a wistful bald cartoon man, and a dog sitting calmly at a table in a burning room
The classics, illustrated: Doge • Pepe-style frog • Grumpy Cat • Nyan Cat • Wojak • This Is Fine — full entries in the meme catalogue below.

Dictionary.com • 2026 Word of the Year

MAXXING

Optimising something to the fullest. From gaming min-maxing → looksmaxxing forums → now everywhere: gymmaxxing, sleepmaxxing, cozymaxxing, tokenmaxxing. The suffix is neutral now, even if its roots aren't. Announced 25 Oct 2026: use ~19× 2025, looksmaxxing searches +900%+. Unc was also in its top five.

brain rot

Oxford Word of the Year 2024. Low-quality, overstimulating content — and the foggy feeling from scrolling it. Usage up 230% in a year.

rage bait + slop

Oxford 2025 picked rage bait. Merriam-Webster's 2025 Word of the Year is slop — mass-produced, low-judgement content. Not always AI, always low-effort.

The Dictionary

Status matters: Current = say it sincerely. Ironic = only as a joke. Disputed = sources fight about it. Dead = graveyard energy, kept here so you recognise it.

Polysemy warning from the research: ts, pmo, pyo, od, bop, opp, tight, peak all have two live meanings. Context and tone decide — the card tells you both.

The Meme Catalogue

Every era: rage comics to Italian brainrot to this month's drops. Real template photos where they exist — the actual Distracted Boyfriend stock photo, the actual Kabosu Doge photo — illustrations only where a format is video-only or no real still could be verified.

THE GREAT MEME RESET OF 2026 — IT FAILED (IRONICALLY)

A TikTok campaign (coined late Sept 2025) to reset memes on 1 Jan 2026 back to 2010s dank memes — Big Chungus, Rage Comics, Nyan Cat, Trollface. Verdict in community reporting: participation was ironic rather than sincere, and within days TikTok returned to abstract, meta-driven cycles. The through-line of late-2026 commentary: lifespans have compressed to days, memes get “declared dead within 24 hours,” and forced algorithmic “niche” memes are resented as corny.

Reaction GIFs

The canon: the GIFs that actually get sent, ranked by the mood they're for. Every card is the real GIF, playing — each one was checked frame by frame before it earned a spot. Ranked lists triangulated from GIPHY's and Tenor's most-used charts (2019–2025).

How these load: every GIF is hotlinked from Tenor or GIPHY's own media servers, using their small variants and lazy-loading — the GIF files are not stored with this page, so the site stays a lean single file. Kept honest: Falcon's “I'll put it on the list” (Captain America: Civil War) isn't here — no verifiable animated version of that exact moment could be found on Tenor or GIPHY, so it doesn't get a fake.

How slang spreads & dies

Short-form video compressed a years-long cycle into weeks. One illustrative 2026 analysis put average time to “corporate death” at ~159 days — treat the number as directional, the pattern is confirmed everywhere.

1

Invented in a niche

Black American speech, ballroom, a Discord, a streamer chat, a region, a game. Not understanding it is part of the point.

2

Creator amplification

A rapper or streamer blows it up. Kai Cenat is the most-cited mint: rizz, gyatt, glazing, fanum tax.

3

Cross-platform migration

TikTok → Reels → X → Shorts → group chat → classroom. Each hop strips context — see gyatt & crash out.

4

Dictionary capture

Explainers + Word of the Year. Documentation that users read as a death certificate.

5

Brand / parent adoption

The corporate death curse. Once a brand or news anchor says it sincerely, in-group value collapses.

6

Irony, revival, or English

Dead terms live ironically, as nostalgia, or graduate to just… English. Lowkey, bruh, smh did that.

Origins & credit

A lot of “TikTok slang” is AAVE, Black queer ballroom, hip-hop, or London Multicultural English — relabelled after virality. This dictionary credits the origin, not just the TikTok date.

AAVE — decades before TikTok: cap/no cap, bet, deadass, ong, fr, finna, drip, flex, lowkey/highkey, crash out, gyatt (as exclamation), unc, and the oath family — word to bro / word to my mother (NYC, verified in the exhaustive research via Urban Dictionary: sworn on your blood brother or a brother-figure, e.g. “word to bro I landed that flip”).

Contested use means: semantic loss, performance “blaccent” for clout, and credit erasure — while Black speakers face penalties for the same speech adopters profit from. Know Your Meme's TS PMO ICL entry frames the 2024–25 slang-overload wave in exactly those terms.
Ballroom / Black queer culture (NYC, 1970s–80s → drag → TikTok): slay, ate & left no crumbs, it's giving, serving, clock it / clocked, tea, shade, periodt, gagged, mother, lewk.

London MLE: mandem, peng, blud/bruv, innit, bare, ends, wasteman, safe, wagwan, creps, peak (unfortunate — opposite of US peak).
⚠️ Tagged as insults / sensitive in the research — not neutral slang: huzz (respelling of “hoes”), bird, sket, foid (incel/manosphere insult), chud (political insult). Clanker is different — it's an insult for robots/AI from Star Wars, not a human slur, though KYM notes newer robot-slur memes borrowing racist-language patterns sparked a satire-vs-prejudice debate. Pepe the Frog: harmless 2005 comic character, appropriated by extremist groups in the 2010s, then reclaimed in mainstream use — the image alone isn't proof of intent in 2026, but the history is noted. Tweaking & crash out have drug / mental-health roots — joking use is normal, using them for someone in real distress minimises it. “No diddy” jokes about alleged crimes — flagged contested in the research.

🪦 The Graveyard

Dead, dated, or ironic-only. Sincere use here marks you as out of touch. This is the only place some of these belong now.

6-7 / six-seven

Status: DEAD — community verdict, and this is its only home on this site. A deliberately meaningless chant (sometimes glossed “so-so / 6-or-7 out of 10”) with an alternating palms-up gesture. Origin: Skrilla's “Doot Doot (6 7)” (Dec 2024), LaMelo Ball (6'7") edits, the 67 Kid. Origin meaning is disputed and stays disputed: 67th St Philadelphia vs 67th St Chicago vs police 10-67 vs Skrilla himself: “I never put an actual meaning on it, and I still would not want to” (Complex, Oct 2025). Why dead: Dictionary.com 2025 Word of the Year, South Park lampoon, teacher bans, #1 on Lake Superior State's 2026 Banished Words list, USA Today (June 2026) calling it an outdated fad, brand adoption (Pizza Hut 67¢ wings, McDonald's/KFC/Domino's) — “the grown-ups have killed it.” Still being the most-searched term is not the same as sincere use. Note: 41 is NOT dead — it stays in the main dictionary as current ironic nonsense.

skibidi (sincere)

Ironic-only for older users; still a playground joke for Gen Alpha — borderline, flagged contested. The Skibidi Toilet format itself is in the catalogue; sincere “skibidi” as a compliment is not alive.

sigma • Ohio (sincere)

Ironic-only. “What the sigma?” and “only in Ohio” are 2023-era references now. Sincere sigma grindset is the joke target, not a personality.

YOLO • swag • bae • on fleek

Consensus dead 2010s. Plus turnt, totes, can't even, bye Felicia, ROFL, TTYL, phat, bling, crunk, fo' shizzle, adulting — all in the dictionary marked Dead so you can recognise them in the wild.

lit • yeet • cheugy (sincere)

Dead/ironic. Lit was replaced by fire. Cheugy is now itself cheugy. F in chat and pwned survive only as retro gaming references.

Harlem Shake • Mannequin Challenge • Bottle Flip

2010s challenge formats, plus Longcat, Nyan Cat and rage comics as active memes — all revived only through 2026-is-the-new-2016 nostalgia. Grimace Shake, NPC Streaming and Girl Dinner (2023 peaks) are dated references now.

Disagreement preserved: bet, cap/no cap, rizz, slay, bussin' appear on BOTH “current 2026” and “dead 2026” lists. Brand guides retire them; origin communities and general glossaries still list them as current. The dictionary marks them Disputed for exactly that reason — don't let a brand guide overrule the community that made the word.

Emoji & stacking have rules too.

Laugh markers in 2026: 💀 skull and 😭 loudly-crying (ironic) are the current laugh signals. 😂 / 🤣 as your default reads millennial in 2026 emoji guides.
Don't stack: “icl ts pmo fr sybau ong no cap bet” in one sincere sentence is the joke. The cluster is parody of overuse — sincere stacking reads as “fellow kids” performance.
